With an access to thousands of free to download and use fonts for designers today, it has become quite confusing to choose the type. As a result, the final piece is overwhelmed with unwanted typographical situations: This is what happens when you have a little too many to fit in.
While many designers may be stuck in the vortex of those thousands of fonts to choose from, there are those who pull of an epic web design regardless of anything. How do they do it? Top-notch web design Dubai based agencies and independent world class designers have five secret tips to give away to you in this matter. Find out what they are to better your web design endeavors in times to come:
1. Skip a few Typefaces
Back in the day, graphic designers were taught to stick to 5 or 6 default typefaces to handle all the possible scenarios. It leaves very few traces of confusion and creates a distinct personality of the designer as using only selected fonts will help people to better identify the designer through the chosen fonts.
However, a disadvantage of this maybe that the work will become monotonous and may seem a bit limited too. But if you are creative enough, you will have your very own ‘palette’ instead of basic fonts only that you can play around with and create versatility out of a single typeface if need be.
2. Auto-Tracing and Lumpy Vectors have Signs for You
Type has been created by actual foundries earlier that has laid the foundation for modern digital fonts. The foundry that has been designed for the typeface has cut the corners to produce it. They must have been auto-traced in Illustrator, put in FontLab or any similar program without being bothered to actually clean up or correct the errors that have been made by the software.
Display fonts when shown at large sizes can be tracked easily. All you have to do is blow them up to a larger size and you can tell from a poorly drawn font to one that is elegant and readable. You may want to use clean vectors in order to add a pristine look to your fonts.
3. Symbols are Important
Sometimes symbols just doesn’t seem like the most important of the things. But then comes a time when you need one and then you are forced to just stuff it in. What you can do is simply pick a font that has all the symbols ready for you.
Regardless of what you do, just remember never to stick to one typeface that you seem is perfect. Your work will demand creativity and you will have to kick yourself for better options to fill in the gaps. So never commit to an incomplete font or one that proved best for one project, as it may not be perfect enough for another.
4. Focus on Type Weights
Type weights are pivotal pieces in the typography puzzle. While they may have seemed boring and ordinary, they can add a lot of significance when really needed (e.g. bold, italic).
There are also fonts that come in a single weight. Should you choose to work with them, it is absolutely necessary to take all of their limitations into account and then go ahead with the project.
5. Perfect Application to Lead the Way
If you are using a combination of web font and print font or just either of the two (more than two fonts for a single purpose is a bad idea), remember that both of them are different from each other. Web fonts are designed in a way that they work best on a computer screen. Sans serif, Arial and Tahoma are examples of that and they can also be used for digital applications. Just a few tweaks and they are good to go.
Modern typefaces that have emerged, like Helvetica, are good both on screen and off screen. Helvetica Neue is a popular font that was created particularly for digital design as it relies on Helvetica’s class letterforms. Remember to Google the fonts, their origins and best uses of those fonts to end up with a best case scenario.
Best of web designs don’t just fall into the right places. They are made up of perfectly made choices, wisely made decisions, rechecking the final results and tweaking them to perfection as corrections are made. Good font(s) is one of the matters that when taken into account and executed correctly can have a lot of impact on the final result. Do that and you will never fail in creating the perfect web designs that will win you clients.
