Amazon will invest $1 billion in India

Amazon Chief Jeff Bezos said, that the company will invest an astounding amount of $ 1 billion in digitizing Small and Medium Businesses (SMBs) in India.

Jeff Bezos said, Amazon is betting big on Indian SMBs, he also added that Amazon India will use its global footprints to export $10 billion worth of ‘Make in India‘ goods by 2025. He added that the alliance between India and the USA “The world’s oldest and largest democracy” will be the most important one in the 21st century.

“I want to make a prediction for you – the 21st century is going to be the Indian century,” he said, adding this (India) country has something special,” he added. Bezos, the CEO, and co-founder of eCommerce giant Amazon, who is in India for an official visit made a surprise entry in the Amazon India SMBhav event in New Delhi.


Bezos’s entry was not on the official agenda in the event. Amit Agarwal, Country Head of Amazon India, posted about his ‘surprise’ visit through a tweet. Addressing the audience and talking about his entrepreneurial journey, he said, “I had this idea and I knew that if I don’t try I would regret it. Last 25 years, what happened is beyond my expectations.”

Jeff Bezos landed in India Today and paid homage to Mahatma Gandhi, at Raj Ghat. He is scheduled to meet Mukesh Ambani and Ratan Tata, followed by celebrity meet and a fireside chat with Shah Rukh Khan.

Amazon India also plans to establish Digital Haats in 100 cities, villages, and communities to help businesses integrate into the digital economy. The Digital Haats will provide services like eCommerce onboarding, imaging, and cataloging, warehouse space, logistics, digital marketing, and compliance. Digital Haats will be in local neighborhoods and available to MSMEs irrespective of their association with Amazon.

To support local shops and kirana stores, Amazon will be expanding the Amazon Easy and “I Have Space” programs to provide additional income opportunities. With Amazon Easy, Kirana stores will be able to set up kiosks to provide assistance to their customers in choosing the right product, placing an order on Amazon and earning a commission on the sales.

Bezos detailed the audience on Amazon’s Digitize India pledge in the first Amazon SMBhav Summit. The two-day event is hosting more than 3,000 businesses, traders, startups, and technology solution companies. The event is destined to provide MSMEs in India an opportunity to engage with Amazon on how they can expand their businesses in India and abroad, learn new things, understand new market opportunities for online businesses, and much more.

During the summit, Bezos also presented three Small Business Awards to local Indian businesses for Digital SMB of the year, Woman Entrepreneur of the Year, and Global SMB of the Year. In addition to Bezos, speakers included Narayana Murthy, co-founder – Infosys; Kishore Biyani, Founder & CEO – Future Group; and other industry leaders from across the spectrum of digital businesses.
